Others have contacted me from around the world, in the intervening years, and not all have been successful. I would therefore caution against carrying it out, maybe the firmware of the radio has changed over time, or in that it only applies to certain markets. As such, please proceed only if you are brave (and no, I dont offer any warranty).If you have memories set in the radio, then the first step would be to record these if you wanted to re-input them after the modification. I use FTBasicMMO and used this to read the radio settings (but see note 2 below)Next we power off and disconnect all connectors.Remove the top cover. Note the non-consecutive numbering - make sure you positively identify the required jumpers before proceeding.Remove the un-required jumpers by using a fine tipped soldering iron and fine tweezers (and a magnifying glass!).

Next in theory you could use these removed jumpers and solder them in the locations that need them adding. However, because this is really fiddly (for me), and because the jumpers are zero ohm resistors, I elected to just solder bridge the lands for the newly required jumpers. Here's the resultNext, reassemble everything. On powering on you'll need to do a reset. When I used the master reset as detailed in he manual ( and ) I found that I could still not transmit on 5Mhz. A more careful read of the instructions I was following indicated that a reset involving and and together was required. I carried this out and was now able to TX on 5Mhz.Next I wanted to reload the programming into the radio.

As I use FTBasicMMO I elected to use that only to find it failed on writing back to the rig. This turned out to be because the Rig ID had changed as part of the modification. FTBasicMMO now reported the ID as 50/06 whereas it was 15/06 before. The solution was to save the original programming as CSV, read the radio to set the ID to 50/06, import the saved CSV data and then finally write it back to the radio - job done.Notes:. Tying this did the trick and allowed transmission of 5Mhz. I use to read and write memories to my 857. Following the reset above I found that this program would cause a report of 'Error' on the 857 when trying to send programming to the radio. Whilst investigating this, I noticed that the pre-mod radio had a 'Rig ID' of 15/06 and post mod a 'Rig ID' of 50/06. I am not sure of the significance of these numbers but by reading the rig and then import the old settings from CSV, I was able to send the old memories to the 857 as a rig with an ID of 50/06.
